EIT Health is an independent EU organization established in 2008 to promote innovation and entrepreneurship across Europe, a Knowledge and Innovation Community (KIC) created by the European Institute for Innovation and Technology (EIT).

EIT Health leverages the expertise of more than 140 member organisations - from the pharma, diagnostics and medtech fields, payers, insurers, research institutions, and top universities. Its goal is to advance the health sector, promote future conditions for a healthier life and for the well-being of the European population.

With a budget of € 2 billion over the next decade, EIT Health financially supports the best entrepreneurial talent and the best researchers in Europe, to foster the development and commercialization of innovative products and services in the health sector, addressing the challenges posed by demographic change and aging society; in order to do this, calls are sent each year to the best health projects at European level.

EIT Health is built around three pillars: Accelerator, Campus, Innovation.

The Accelerator programme endeavours to transform the innovation process by offering entrepreneurs support and services to access relevant markets and to increase the commercialisation of European research outcomes.

Knowledge transfer is ensured through the EIT Health Campus, offering entrepreneurial, business- and application-oriented short and intensive courses as well as MSc and PhD programmes.

The Innovation projects programme supports multidisciplinary initiatives that address Europe’s diverse healthcare challenges.

An extended network of countries all over Europe

The regional structure of EIT Health extends all across Europe. With its headquarters in Munich (Germany), EIT Health has established six co-location centres in London (UK-Ireland), Stockholm (Scandinavia), Barcelona (Spain), Paris (France), Mannheim and Heidelberg (Germany/Switzerland) and Rotterdam (Belgium/ Netherlands). All six co-location centres are defined by the EU Innovation Scorecard as high innovation performers and all locations provide a shared physical space, with access to laboratories, test beds, offices and seminar rooms that will promote close cooperation. With the twin goals of leveraging diversity and driving the potential of emerging innovation clusters, EIT Health counts on the “EIT Health InnoStars” network. These regional clusters consist of industry partners, academia, and health providers linked to seven regions in six countries – Croatia, Hungary, Poland, Portugal, Italy and Wales.

EIT Health Regional Innovation Scheme

The European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) established the Regional Innovation Scheme (RIS) to increase the innovation capacity in areas of Europe not directly benefitting from the activities of EIT Health and other EIT Knowledge and Information Communities (KICs).

EIT Health’s RIS is designed to close the gap between regions that are leaders in healthcare innovation and areas that have more moderate innovation. The goal is to help citizens in less developed European countries enjoy the benefits of innovation – and have access to new products and services supporting active aging and healthy living.

The ARCA Consortium

The ARCA Consortium in 2017 carried out activities as RIS Coordinator for the EIT Health projects, operating on the national territory to involve the most deserving entrepreneurial initiatives in the support and acceleration programs.

Among the 20 initiatives proposed by ARCA, 9 were selected for two acceleration programs (Innostars Awards and Catapult), collecting a total of € 112,000 of direct funding.

For 2018 ARCA was selected by EIT Health as RIS HUB for Sicily, with the aim of creating a regional network of stakeholders for the promotion of policies and activities implemented by EIT Health throughout Europe. As part of this program, ARCA has promoted funding calls for companies and research groups in the healthcare sector, is promoting high-level training for students and entrepreneurs and will promote projects that will involve the local population on health issues.

Furthermore, the role of ARCA for 2018 will be to create opportunities for connection and exchange between the actors of the local innovation ecosystem and to promote the KTI (Knowledge Triangle Integration) model at regional level, with the aim of bringing out possible synergies between those who create innovation for the health system in Sicily, Sicilian policy makers and stakeholders.

The EIT Health Partner for ARCA in Italy is the University of Naples Federico II, with which the activities are coordinated on the basis of the programs defined by the EIT Health headquarters.
